History of the Altemps Palace

Palazzo Altemps was built on the spot where the largest marble storage in the city used to be. The construction works began in 1477 in accordance with the design of famous Melozzo da Forli and were meant for Girolamo Riario (Pope’s nephew). When the owner was killed in 1488, the palace was partially looted. In 1511 Cardinal Francesco Soderini bought the place and renovated and expanded it later.

Then in 1568 Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps purchased the palace whose name it bears to this day. He entrusted the restoration of the building to Martino Longhi the Elder who shaped its final look.

Giovanni Angelo, Cardinal’s descendant, built a theater inside Palazzo Altemps, and then in 1690, the Arcadian Academy was founded here as well.

Altemps family owned the place until the late 19 century. Later Vatican City took possession of it and set up a seminary there. After a while, the building got abandoned and run-down. However, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage bought it even in such critical state, and after some reconstruction, it was included in the National Roman Museum complex.
