Montecitorio Palace, Rome

Montecitorio Palace, Rome

The Palace of Montecitorio in Rome is one of the most interesting buildings in Italy. The structure attracts attention not only with its refined architecture, but also with history. The meetings of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy are held in this palace.

History of the Palazzo Montecitorio

The creation of the Palace of Montecitorio started in the middle of the 17th century. Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi was the initiator of construction. The architect of the palace in the Baroque style was the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini. But the construction did not work out. The sponsor of the construction Pope Gregory XV died.

The construction of the Palazzo Montecitorio continued in 1694 with the Pope Innocent XII. The architect Carlo Fontana fully realized the original design. The building turned out to be both majestic and restrained at the same time. One of the most important administrative bodies of Rome – the Pontifical Court, the residence of the governor and the police department are located in the walls of the palace.

Over the years, the palace has not lost its importance in the social and political life of the city. After the unification of Italy, the Chamber of Deputies was located here. In this regard, the internal layout of the building has undergone some changes. The prevailing style was modern. The authorities have changed many times, but the place of their meetings has remained unchanged for several centuries.

Exposition of the Palace

The exterior charm of the building can be admired for hours, looking for the finest details of the decorations. It is worth taking a few photos on the background of the palace and the famous obelisk made out from the solar clock of Caesar Augustus. But apart from that, you will find an exquisite exposition of the past.

The following exhibits are presented:

  • collection of paintings of 16-20 centuries,
  • collection of ancient sculptures,
  • carpets and tapestries,
  • antique clocks,
  • furniture,
  • archaeological finds and more.

The time of visits to the Palazzo Montecitorio is limited. Excursions are held every first Sunday of the month. Visiting time is from 10:00 to 17:00. The entrance is free.

How to get there

The best way to travel in Rome for a tourist is the metro. To reach the palace of Montecitorio, you should take the "A" line to the station "Barberini".
