Ponte Palatino, Roma

Ponte Palatino, Roma

Ponte Palatino, also known as the English Bridge (Ponte Inglese), is one of the longest bridges in the city of Rome. It got its name due to the close location to the Palatine Hill. It was built in the period from 1886 to 1890.

History of the Palatino Bridge

The bridge was built by the Italian architect Angelo Vescovali. It is worth noting that this master also owns the project of another bridge in Rome – Garibaldi. The Palatino was built on the site of the ruined Emilia bridge.

To the right of the Palatino Bridge there is the ancient Cloaca Maximus, which was created as far back as the 6th century BC and was part of the ancient sewage system. It was designed to drain water from the marshes, and later to remove urban sewage. Nowadays its part functions as a rain sewer.

How to get there

The Palatino Bridge is in the central part of Rome. You can use the services of public transport:

  • Buses number 51, 85, 87, 118 and 160.
  • Metro – take any station on line B and get off at the Colosseo stop.
