Fountain at Piazza Nicosia, Rome
Fountain at Piazza Nicosia is one of the oldest fountains of Rome, built in the middle of the 16th century. During its long history, the fountain has gone through many changes. Several times it was moved from place to place. At the same time, the fountain retains its charm and elegance.
History of the Fountain at Nicosia Square
The first version of the fountain was built in 1572. The sculptor Giacomo della Porta worked on his creation. The fountain was installed on Popolo Square. The Fountain bowl had an 8-faceted shape. Sculptures of newts were installed inside. Later, in 1823, it was decided to move the fountain to another place due to the fact that it was too small for such square. And on Popolo Square, another fountain was installed.
In the heart of Nicosia Square, the fountain appeared in 1950. This became possible after the demolition of several old houses. The modern view was given to the fountain at Piazza Nicosia by the architect Marcello Piacentini. He kept the 8-coal form. The inner part of the fountain is lined with marble. In the center, a marble vase decorated with heraldic ornaments rises. The jets of water playfully fall down, creating ringing music around the fountain. In order to protect this monument of architecture, the fountain was fenced.
Sculptures of newts, which were originally part of the fountain, were considered too large for it and were transferred to the Moor Fountain.
