Fountain on Campo de’ Fiori, Rome

Nowadays, the Fountain on Campo de’ Fiori in Rome is a copy of the work of Giacomo della Porta. The original work of the sculptor appeared on the square in 1590. The square where the fountain had been situated, was taken over by the market. The cattle drunk from the fountain, the traders washed vegetables and fruits there – the reservoir got clogged. Knowing about this practice, Pope Gregory XV in 1622 decided to cover the fountain with a lid. Then the fountain began to be called Terrina (in Italian – soup tureen, dish).
In 1889, the fountain was dismantled to make room for the monument to Giordano Bruno in the center of the square. Because in February 17, 1600,here on the square Campo dei Fiori, philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned alive for heresy.
In 1898, as part of the reconstruction of the historical appearance of the square, a copy of it was built instead of the old fountain. Fountain was without a cover, as in the original version. It is located near the monument of Giordano Bruno till the present.
In 1924, what was left of the original Terrina Fountain was restored and installed on the Piazza della Chiesa Nuova.
