Monument to Seismit Doda, Rome

Monument to Federico Seismit-Doda in Rome is located on Piazza Benedetto Cairoli. This bronze statue was created by the master Eugenio Maccagnani to honor famous secretary and politician of the 19th century – Federico Doda. This sculpture can be found in a quiet and beautiful park, near a fountain and a place to rest. The travertine plinth has the Risorgimento politician sitting on it with a book in hand as if deeply thinking about the fate of Italy and its future. There are also writings engraved onto the three sides of monument’s base. They mean distinctive traits that belonged to the statesman but the writing “Abiding commitment to freedom” takes up the center of the artwork.

The history of the monument

Federico Seismit-Doda was a member of the Historical Far Left that pursued a goal to liberate organizations, make the education free, establish an 8-hour working day, create pension, implement social protection etc. That’s why when he died people started to raise money for the monument right away and after a year the bronze statue was completed. Officially authorities in Rome were hesitant to install it – the world was in a complex international situated and Federico was known for anti-Austrian statements. The sculpture was set in the early 20th century, the installment was carried out without any celebration, in secret to prevent from drawing any unnecessary attention.

You can get to the monument to Federico Seismit-Doda in Rome by taking the subway to Repubblica (line A) or a bus № 64.
