Statue of Giordano Bruno, Rome

Statue of Giordano Bruno, Rome

On the Roman market square of Campo dei Fiori there is the statue of the outstanding thinker of the Renaissance Giordano Bruno. The philosopher stands on a high pedestal. He has a book in his hands, and his head is covered with a hood. On the sides of the pedestal, the author of the monument, the sculptor Ettore Ferrari, created images of followers of Bruno and persons executed for religious reasons. The monument adorns the square since 1889.

History of the statue of Giordano Bruno

Masons wanted to create the Statue of Giordano Bruno in Rome after the publication of the encyclical "Humanum Genus" by Pope Leo XIII in 1884, in which masons were called "sects of demonic spirits". In the distant 1600, Giordano Bruno was condemned by the church and burned at the stake "for heresy".

Sculptor Ettore Ferrari was invited to create a monument of the great thinker, who took it as an honor and did the work without requiring a fee. Because of the ban on the creation of the monument, the sculpture remained in the studio for a long time. After the election, the new municipal council allowed it to be installed on Campo dei Fiori, in the very spot where he was executed. Nowadays, atheists and freethinkers often hold their events on the square near the statue.

How to get there

Campo dei Fiori can be reached by bus №46, 62, 64, 916, 916 F, N5, N15, N20 to the Vittorio Emanuele/navona stop. In a five minutes walk there is the Piazza Navona. Close by there is Piazza Farnese with palazzo of the same name and amazing fountains.
