Statue of San Michele Arcangelo, Rome

The first Statue of San Michele Arcangelo appeared on the Castel Sant'Angelo in the 13th century. The majestic bronze monument, which we can see today, dates back to the 17th century. Rather, it is the copy. The original is kept in the castle itself. It was created by Flemish sculptor Peter Anton von Verschaffelt. The height of the castle does not allow you to clearly see the statue, which seems to hover over the city, guarding against the outrage. To see the Archangel not through the camera lens, you need to climb to the observation deck of the castle. From here, among other things, you will see an amazing view of the city.

Statue in honor of Archangel Michael

According to the legend, during the plague epidemic in the year 590, the Pope Gregory the Great saw the image of the Archangel Michael, who, at the top of the fortress, put the sword into the sheath, which predicted the end of the deadly disease. In honor of this event, centuries later, a statue of the archangel was built on the top of the Castel Sant'Angelo.

In order to get to the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, you need to use one of the buses: № 62, 40, 23, 271, 982, 280 to the stop Piazza Pia, № 34 to the stop via di Porta Castello, № 49, 87, 926, 990 to the stop on the intersection of Piazza Cavour and via Crescenzio, № 46,64 to the stop of Santo Spirito. Or by metro on line A to the stations of Ottaviano-San Pietro or Lepanto.

If you want to look more closely at the statue of Archangel Michael, it is necessary to climb to the observation deck of the Castel Sant'Angelo, that means you need to buy a ticket for his visit. The cost of admission to the castle is about 11 euros. On the first Sunday of every month, admission is free.
