National Museum of the Middle Ages, Rome

National Museum of the Middle Ages, Rome

The National Museum of the Middle Ages in Rome was opened in the middle of the 20th century with the aim of studying and preserving the surviving exhibits of the period. This archaeological museum is situated in the thirteenth district of Rome, which is called Europa and is designated Q. XXXII. The museum was opened in 1967.

Exhibits of the Museum of the Middle Ages

In the halls of the museum there are archaeological finds of periods from late antiquity to the Middle Ages: 4-14 centuries of our era. Basically, these are the exhibits collected in central Italy, including, of course, Rome.

  • Materials of the late antiquity (4-6 century) are exhibited in the first hall of the museum. These are imperial marble portraits, funerary inscriptions, jewelry and so on.
  • After this, you can see everything that was found in the late 19th century during excavations of the Nocera Umbra necropolis in Perugia. Necropolis consisted of 166 graves. Not only dishes, but also clothes, shoes, as well as various accessories – pendants, seals, buckles, jewelry boxes, tools and jewelry have survived.
  • In the third room there are exhibits found during excavations of the necropolis Longobarda di Castel Trosino. The findings were divided into two rooms, female and male subjects respectively.
  • The fourth and fifth halls are decorated with the reliefs of the Early Middle Ages. Here you can see, for example, a bas-relief depicting Alexander the Great.
  • In the 6th and 7th halls the surviving objects of two rural areas are exhibited: Santa Cornelia and Santa Rufina.
  • In the 8th hall there are exhibits dedicated to the Copts, an ethno-religious group that primary inhibited the territory of Egypt. These are fragments of liturgical dresses, fabrics and the like.
