Central Museum of the Risorgimento, Rome

The Central Museum of the Risorgimento focuses on Italian national liberation struggle that carries the same name and on few other significant events. Exhibits that are put on display in museum highlight the history from the end of 18th century to World War I. The museum is located inside the left building that belongs to Altare della Patria complex. The opening was held in fall of 1970.

The museum brings visitors closer to history as they go up the stairs where one can find engravings depicting Risorgimento and quotes of famous personalities about the period.

Camillo Benso conte di Cavour, Giuseppe Mazzini, Giuseppe Garibaldi were instrumental in Italian unification. The first section includes pieces that relate to these people one way or another. By the way, you’ll encounter lots of monuments dedicated to them. Museum’s exhibits are presented in the chronological order: starting from Napoleonic times and up to the capture of Rome, which was the pinnacle moment of the Risorgimento.

The exposition consists of 14 parts, each one for every period of the Risorgimento. Among the exhibits, you’ll find letters, photos, personal belongings, authentic flags, clothes and other things that were part of important to Italy events. It is worth noting that the museum possesses 700 historical flags of Italian army, navy and air forces.

It also offers short video tours about many pieces.

How to get there

The nearest subway station – Colosseo, which is 15 minutes away from the place. Bus stops Fori Imperiali/campidoglio, P.za Venezia, Ara Coeli/p.za Venezia are close to the Museum of the Risorgimento as well.

Opening hours: the Museum of the Risorgimento is open every day from 9:30 a.m. till 6 p.m. In 30 minutes before closing the museum invites the last group of visitors.
