Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome

Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome

The Roman Museum of Modern Art (abbreviated as Italian MACRO) is one of the most visited and wealthy museums in the city. It is in a 5 minutes walk from the Villa Albani. At the end of the 20th century, the Italians wanted to open a museum of contemporary art, since at that time there was not a single one in the city. In the end, they decided to open two. One of them was the National Art Museum of the 21st century (MAXXI) on via Guido Reni, 4A. And on Via Nizza, MACRO was opened.

The MACRO Museum was officially opened in 2002, in the buildings of the old Peroni beer factory. Today the museum is opened in two different places: on Via Nizza and in the former slaughterhouse on Piazza Orazio Giustiniani, 4.

Exhibits of the Museum of Modern Art

The museum has about 1200 exhibits, created since 1960 to this day. For example, here you will see works of art from the 1960s: Gastone Novelli, Mimmo Rotella, Ettore Colla, Leoncillo, Tano Festa, Titina Maselli. Also the works of Roman artists: Castellani, Dorazio, Fioroni, Uncini, Mauri, Montessori, Giovannoni, Baruchello, Asdrubali, Cucchi, Dessì and Accardi.

Thanks to the large exhibition area and the vast expanse of the museum-factory, it has become a suitable place for holding international exhibitions. That is how a real cultural complex "Museum of Modern Art" was created. It has a multimedia library and a bookstore. And also a conference hall and a restaurant. On the museum’s roof there is a multi-level garden and an open-air cafe.

MACRO Testaccio

MACRO Testaccio is the second part of the Museum of Contemporary Art MACRO in Rome. The exhibits are housed in a building that in the 19th century served as an abattoir. One of the two buildings is used for a permanent exhibition.
