Statues of City Tower, Turin

Statues of City Tower, Turin

Statues of City Tower in Turin are set at the entrance of the main administrative building of the city. The total number of statues near the City Tower is four. Sculptures are made of Carrara white marble. They are placed in pairs, with a reasonable approach to the matter. The first two monuments are installed immediately near the main entrance, between the columns supporting the balcony of the second floor. The individuals they are dedicated to were also on the front line, always in the heat of battles: the prince Eugenio di Savoia and the Duke of Ferdinando di Savoia-Genova. The first one was a glorified military man at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, and the second took an active position in the first war of independence with Austria during the Risorgimento. They were heroes who, with fire and sword, achieved their goals.

Another pair of sculptures is hidden in the gallery under the arches of the first floor of the palace. These are the most famous politicians, King Carlo Alberto and his son, the first king of the united Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II. These two monarchs played a key role in the unification of Italy. They acted in word and deed, and they became loved and revered by the people. A monument to Vittorio Emanuele II was the last to appear here, established during the lifetime of the king. It was done by the sculptor Vincenzo Vela. The grand opening of all completed sculptures took place in January 1866.
