Monument to Casimiro Teja, Turin

Monument to Casimiro Teja, Turin

Monument of Casimiro Teja is located in the very center of Turin, in a small public garden. This artwork was created by sculptor Edoardo Rubino in 1904. Originally the sculpture was situated on Corso Cairoli. However, it was moved to the current location in 1923. This memorial was dedicated to Italian painter named Casimiro Teja (1830–1897) who was known as «Puff» back in his day. He was a caricaturist, and his artworks often featured priests, doctors, and politicians. In 1860 the satirist was accepted into a Masonic lodge of Turin.

Lots of Italian monuments are created in an extraordinary way. Even though this memorial is a bust of an artist, it is also placed under Pasquino’s statue replica that has been considered a symbol of political satire in Italy. People used to attach notes with satirical poems to such monuments at night which is why they were called “talking statues.” What a unique way to honor Casimiro Teja as a caricaturist and satirist!
