Monument to Giovan Battista Bottero, Turin
Monument of Giovan Battista Bottero is located in the heart of Turin. Small resort area around here owes its name to Bottero. This statue was created by sculptor Odoardo Tabacchi and officially opened to the public in 1899, two years after journalist’s death to whom the memorial is dedicated in the first place. Born in 1822 Giovan Bottero obtained a degree in medical field later in adulthood, but ended up turning to journalism. He founded a newspaper called “Gazzetta del Popolo” together with Felice Govean and Alessandro Borella. Giovan Bottero was also a big supporter of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the revolutionary movement where his newspaper played a significant role. By the way, the issues have been published for 135 years since day one.
A statue made of bronze is set up on stone plinth. Bottero is depicted full-length facing people and holding a newspaper in his right hand. There is also a stone plaque under statue’s feet. You can see Bottero’s lifespan and small text in Italian describing his work carved on it.
How to get
The monument is situated in a small public garden in Turin’s center, on Largo IV Marzo where busts of Alessandro Borella and satirist Casimiro Teja (both were co-founders of the newspaper mentioned above) can be found as well. Palazzo Civico and Palazzo Barolo are less than a minute away from here. You can reach this place by taking a tram that follows route 4 or buses that follow routes 11, 19, 27, 51, 57, 92, N04, STAR2, W60. Get off on Corte D'Appello stop.
