Green Count Monument, Turin

Green Count Monument, Turin

Green Count Monument in Turin (Monumento al Conte verde) is dedicated to Amadeus VI, Count of Savoy who ruled in the 14th century. He got the nickname “Green Count” thanks to the color of his armor. Many leaders in Northern Italy held Amadeus VI in high regard. He was known for his crusade against the Turks who used to live on the Holy Land and for military exploits during battles against Bulgaria.

The monument was finally opened to the public on the Palazzo di Citta Square on March 7, 1853. The fence, however, was changed several times. At first, it was just a wooden fence, then poles with chains were installed instead, and after that, the monument was enclosed with metal bars and a gate. In 1900 the gate was removed. In 1993 the fence was replaced with a new one once again.

The monument consists of several sculptures. These three figures depicting people fighting can be seen on the top of the memorial. This is an interpretation of the battle that occurred between Count of Savoy himself and the Turks during the campaign. Obviously, Amadeus VI dominates and wins. One of the enemies is already struck down, and the other one that is hiding behind a shield is about to fall. Each piece of armor and weapon is highly detailed.
