Fountain of Amphorae, Rome
The fountain of the Amphorae is an unusual fountain, which is located in the central part of the Eternal City, on Piazza Testaccio. This name is not random: thanks to its original composition, which has attracted tourists from different parts of the world for many years, it is a real pride of the townspeople. The creation dates back to the early 20th century.
History of Fontana delle Amfore
The project of one of the most extraordinary fountains of Rome belongs to the famous Italian master Pietro Lombardi. The fountain of amphorae was built in 1927 and installed on Tastaccio Square. However, in 1935, the market was opened here and it was decided to move the fountain to the neighboring Piazza dell’Emporio. Here it was located until 2005, then, after the market was transferred, the Amphora Fountain was returned to its historical place.
About the amphorae and Piazza Testaccio
The composition of the fountain is symbolic. Starting from the 2nd century AD, there were numerous warehouses in this area, in which amphorae with grain, wine, butter and other products brought to the port of Rome were stocked. In the future, the products were sorted, and the amphorae were broken, because in those days it was forbidden to use the amphora again. Years later, the Testaccio hill was created from the pile of broken amphorae, which gave the name to the whole area of Rome, and also became one of the most unusual sights of the Eternal City.
Amphora is the central part in the composition of the fountain. On the sides there are 4 pools, decorated with heads of sheep.
