Fountain of Apollo Theatre, Rome

Fountain of Apollo Theatre, Rome

The Fountain of Apollo Theatre is one of the most interesting and unusual sights of the Eternal City. It is located on the South bank of the Tiber River, near the Ponte Sant'Angelo. It is included in the list of architectural monuments of the 17th century.

History of the fountain "Del Teatro Apollo"

The history of the fountain "Del Teatro Apollo" begins in the 17th century. Then the native of Sweden Christina arrived in Rome to build a wooden theater here. It was located exactly at the place where the fountain is now working. The grand opening of the theater and the first performance took place in 1670, and the theater received the name of Tor-di-Nona.

The first reconstruction of the theater was held in 1795. Then it received the name of the Teatro Apollo. In 1820, the rich Roman family of Torlonia bought the theater and later, in 1869, transferred it to Rome as a city opera house.

However, the theater did not last long. In 1888, as part of the reconstruction of the Tiber River embankment, the city's leadership decided to demolish the theater.

The fountain in memory of the old theater was built in 1925. Memorable inscription says that earlier on this place there was the Theater-Apollo. Also, masks, a laurel wreath and lyres tell about the fountain's belonging to the theater life. All these elements are an important part of the composition of the fountain "Del Teatro Apollo", they are its main architectural gems. In the lower part there is a stone sarcophagus, where water is collected from the fountain.
