Fountain of the Rome Goddess on Popolo Square, Rome

Fountain of the Rome Goddess on Popolo Square, Rome

The fountain of the goddess of Rome is one of the main attractions of Rome's largest square – Piazza del Popolo, and it is located in its eastern part. It is recognized as an integral part of the composition of the Eternal City.

The picturesque Fontana della dea di Roma is the work of the famous Italian sculptor Giovanni Ceccarini. The construction of the architectural ensemble dates back to the first half of the 19th century, from 1814 to 1823.

In the composition of the fountain the main architectural gem is the image of the goddess of Rome. On either side of it there are two bearded elders, each of which symbolizes the Italian rivers – Aniene and Tiber.

At the bottom of the monument there is the figure of the famous Capitol she-wolf, who feeds the newborn babies – the future founders of the Eternal City – Remus and Romulus. All the figures of the Fontana della dea di Roma are made of marble.
