Monument to Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, Rome

The monument to Giuseppe Gioachino Belli in Rome came along with the help of a group of enthusiastic admirers. Few proactive Romans submitted the design to the local authorities in 1910. The memorial was supposed to be set in Trastevere, the rione of Rome. At first it was planned to place it on the square in front of the bridge, but later on, it was moved to Piazza d’Italia. Citizens raised money in collaboration with city’s government – 30000 Lira in total.

Giuseppe Gioachino Belli was a famous Roman writer of the 19th century and the author of many sonnets. The monument dedicated to him was completed in 1913, its opening coincided with the 50th anniversary of artist’s passing.

Monument’s composition

Michele Tripisciano was the famous Italian architect who created the sculpture.

The poet is shown standing on a pedestal holding a cane in the right hand and leaning on the stone parapet with the left one. Originally the cane was made out of wood, but due to constant stealing it was cast from iron and painted black.

Bas-relief of Tiber and a statue of Pasquino are decorating the artwork. The monument also has two fountains on its sides.

How to get

The monument to Giuseppe Gioachino Belli is located on the square near the bridge called Ponte Garibaldi, in the historical center of Rome. You can get there by public transport. Therefore you can take:

  • Bus № 23, 271, 280 (get off on Piazza Giuseppe Gioachino Belli).
  • Tram № 8, 23, 125, 280, 780.
  • Subway (get off at the Trastevere station).
