Jewish Museum of Rome, Rome

The Jewish Museum of Rome is located within the walls of the Great Synagogue, in the historical part of the city. The museum's collections contain exhibits that tell about the history and culture of the Jewish community in Italy. The museum was opened in 1960, in 2005 a large-scale reconstruction of the complex took place.

Exhibits of the Jewish Museum

The collection of the Jewish Museum is rich in unique exhibits – Roman silver of the 17th and 18th centuries, precious fabrics from different parts of Europe, scrolls, documents, parchments.

The area of ​​the museum reaches 700 square meters. The exhibits are located in 7 thematic halls:

  • Hall of fabrics – here elegant and luxurious fabrics are collected, which are used in the Roman synagogue: velvet, adorned with gold threads; French lace of the 18th century and embroidery.
  • Hall of events of Judaism – exhibits, which tell about Jewish holidays, traditions. Basically, the objects that previously belonged to the Jewish community.
  • Hall of precious stones stores silver, marble and other exhibits.
  • Hall of the Liberation of the Jews – here testimonies and films about the sad period of racial laws and deportation for the Jewish people are collected.
  • The fifth hall was opened in 2009 and is dedicated to the history of Jews who immigrated to Rome from Libya in 1967. During this period, with the support of the UN, about 4000 Jews moved to Israel through Italy. Many of the immigrants have stayed in the Eternal City forever.
  • Hall of daily life in the Ghetto tells about the daily life of Jews in this period: cuisine, architecture, education.

Also, a gallery of antique marble deserves special attention in the museum, here exhibits of 16-19 centuries are collected.

How to get there

The Jewish Museum is located in the center of Rome, on Lungotevere de Cenci Street. You can get here by public transport: tram № 8; bus № 30, 40, 46, 62, 63, 271, 780, 810.

Opening hours:

  • September 16 – June 15: Sunday-Thursday from 10:00 to 16:15, Friday from 09:00 to 13:15 (Saturday – the day off).
  • June 16 – September 15: Sunday-Thursday from 10:00 to 18:15, Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 (Saturday – the day off).

Excursions are conducted in Italian, English, French, Spanish, German and Hebrew.
