Museum of Ancient Sculpture Giovanni Barracco, Rome

Museum of Ancient Sculpture Giovanni Barracco, Rome

The Museum of Ancient Sculpture Giovanni Barracco in Rome offers a collection of works acquired by Giovanni Barracco. In 1902, a well-known collector passed his collections to the city. Giovanni was a great admirer of ancient art. Thanks to a close friend, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli, who at that time was a head of the Archaeological Museum of Naples and the leader of the excavations in Pompeii, Barracco had a love for ancient art.

Giovanni visited archaeological excavations, participated in auctions and antique markets, wrote analytical works on the monuments of ancient Egypt and the Middle East.

Exhibits of the museum

The collection of the Museum of Ancient Sculpture was created, mainly thanks to the personal contribution of Giovanni Barracco. Among them, there are works of Egyptian, Assyrian, Phoenician cultures, as well as Greek sculptures.

In the museum building of the 16th century there are four hundred exhibits of the collection. They are divided according to the chronology and are situated in the nine rooms of the museum.

  • The majority of the Barracco collection is dedicated to Egyptian art. It includes fragments of cemetery sculpture and, in particular, the first dynasties. Important samples were obtained in excavations of the 19th century in various parts of Italy.
  • A part dedicated to Assyrian art presents an important series of reliefs with scenes of wars and hunting.
  • Cypriot art is represented in the form of figures of deities and models of bidders.
  • A special place is occupied by Greek works presented by a collection of ceramics and other items, beginning with the time of Alexander the Great.
