Museo Civico di Zoologia, Rome

Museo Civico di Zoologia in Rome is the largest scientific and educational center in the city. The information about the rich diversity of the animal kingdom of the Earth is stored here carefully. The museum opened its doors to visitors in 1932, it was created on the basis of the city zoological park "Bioparco di Roma". The collection contains more than 5 million species of animals, many of which can be included into the list of endangered species.

History of the Museum of Zoology

The Roman Museum of Zoology was created by European scholars, among whom there was Napoleon's nephew – Carlo Bonaparte. With his active support, millions of rare fauna species from different parts of the world were collected from private collections of Europeans, and the first studies and scientific conferences were organized.

Currently, the Museum of Zoology in Rome is experiencing a high period. With the support of the city administration, modern equipment was purchased, and new cultural and educational projects were adopted.

On the basis of the museum, interactive exhibitions, environmental reconstruction, dioramas and projects for junior schoolchildren are held.

Exhibits of the museum

The collection of the museum is divided into several thematic exhibitions:

  • mammals and their classification;
  • hall of reptiles and amphibians – demonstrates samples of amphibians, beginning with the Permian period;
  • diorama of the Great Barrier Reef;
  • fragments of the cliff of the Red Sea.

A significant part of the exhibits is stored in specially equipped storage facilities, in which special temperature conditions are maintained.

The Museum of Zoology is located in the central part of Rome, you can get here by public transport:

  • Tram: №3, 19, 30В.

Opening hours:

  • From 09:00 to 19:00 (Tuesday-Sunday).
  • Monday is a day off.
