Statue of Gian Domenico Romagnosi, Piacenza

Statue of Gian Domenico Romagnosi, Piacenza

Statue of Gian Domenico Romagnosi in Piacenza is dedicated to one of the heroes of the Resistance movement in Italy. And, as usual, it was installed on one of the central squares of the city. Domenico Romagnosi was a philosopher and a lawyer in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He taught law at several large universities in Italy. He was repeatedly arrested by Austrians for the ideas proclaimed from the university cathedra. But he was released for the lack of evidence. Through his activities he laid the foundation for Risorgimento, putting revolutionary ideas into the minds of young Italians. Although Romagnosi was not a physicist, he did some research in the field of electricity and magnetics. For such experiments, the church considered him to be almost a heretic.

That is why the monument dedicated to him was opened in the era of the united Italy, on the evening of November 18, 1867. The creation of sculpture began in 1866, and the sculptor Cristoforo Marzaroli had worked on it. In 1958, the statue was moved to the courtyard of the Alberoni school, and in 1966 – to the current place near the church of San Francesco. At the heart of the monument there is an octagonal granite pedestal, crowned by a statue of the scientist made out of the white Carrara marble. He is depicted in full length, in a typical lawyer toga. The total height of the monument is 7 meters.
