Dolmen, Piacenza

Dolmen, Piacenza

Dolmen in the city of Piacenza is much younger than all its brethren scattered around the world. In addition, it radically differs from them in its purpose, although it looks alike in a form. If most of the dolmens are cultic and funeral megalithic structures, then in Piacenza, it has a different purpose. It was created by the artist William Xerra more recently, in 1976. Then it was 31 years since the fall of fascism in Italy and the liberation from German troops. And the city council decided to create a monument to Liberation, which marked the beginning of the Italian Resistance. The artist approached the matter completely nontrivially and created a dolmen.

The basic concept of this solution is that resistance does not matter either in time or ethnicity. Similar megalithic structures were erected in different centuries by different peoples. In this, the author saw the topic of resistance common to mankind and embodied this idea in his creation. The result was the construction of three huge stones: two stand vertically, and the third lies on top of them. The whole structure has a height of 3.8 and a width of 4.5 meters. Its weight is 40 tons. Several much smaller stones were put near the base of the structure.

How to get there

Dolmen is located on Stradone Farnese, near the intersection with Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. It is near the center of Piacenza in the province of the same name. Nearby there are the Gotico Palace and the Monument to the Great Adventure. Near the Dolmen there is a bus stop where the transport of routes 1, 5, 6, 8, 10, 15, 16, CS stops.
