Palace of the Captain of the People, Assisi
The Palace of the Captain of the People (Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo) is one of the most important architectural decorations of Piazza del Comune in the Italian city Assisi. This grand medieval construction was built in 1282. Once it used to be Assisi’s military authority center. Later the palace became the city hall. The in the 20th century it came into ownership of the Franciscan order. Currently, this is a well-known and excellently preserved Assisi’s landmark.
The style of this 3-level building fully reflects the age during which it was built – the fascinating medieval classic Gothic style. Palace’s tower constructed in 1305 also has Guelph spikes on top of it so that’s why it might look like a crown from far away. The tower clock was installed in the 15th century. The medieval bell used for popular assemblies is engraved with Saint Francis’ “Canticle of the Sun.”
