Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is located on the square that possesses the same name, within the ancient district of Rome. While taking a walk through Trastevere, you definitely won’t fail to notice the centerpiece of the local square. Medieval mosaic set on the church’s façade makes the building stand out among other constructions in the area. It is one of the oldest religious landmarks ever erected in Rome. It is believed that the first Christian service was held at this very place.

The first time the church was built back in the 3rd century during the reign of Pope Callixtus I. In the 12th century it was thoroughly reconstructed and had a Romanesque bell tower built onto it. Further restoration works didn’t really affect its exterior as much until the 18th century when Pope Clement VII requested to add portico. Big tympanum was set to crown the façade decorated with an embellished portal. Inside you will mostly notice images of Mary including medieval mosaics of the 12th and 13th century. The most important relic of the Basilica of Santa Maria is considered to be the Icon of the Madonna Della Clemenza in the Altemps Chapel that dates back to the 7th century.
