Monument to Ciro Menotti, Modena

Monument to Ciro Menotti, Modena

Monument to Ciro Menotti (Monumento a Ciro Menotti) in Modena stands on one of the main city squares. It is dedicated to an outstanding man, a patriot and a revolutionary, who became the hero of Risorgimento long before its inception. The nobleman Ciro Menotti, joined the rioters against the Austrian domination at a young age, and began to promote the idea of uniting Italy at the beginning of the 19th century. At first, the Duke of Modena, Francesco IV d'Este, was well disposed towards the ideas of the revolutionary. But during the uprising in Modena in February 1831, he changed his position, seized the conspirators, and most of them were executed. Ciro Menotti was hanged. Thus, he became an idealized image of a martyred patriot who died for the united Italy.

In 1879 a monument was created in Modena in his honor. The author of the project was the sculptor Cesare Sighinolfi. The statue and the pedestal are made of white marble. The national hero with a flag in his hands looks at the windows of the Ducal Palace, where a death sentence was signed for him.

How to get there

The statue is located in front of the Ducal Palace of Modena, in Piazza Roma. Not far from the monument there is an interesting Figurine Museum. In the square there is a stop Piazza Roma, which can be reached by bus routes 7A, 11, 391.
