Monument to Alexander Tassoni, Modena

Monument to Alexander Tassoni, Modena

Monument to Alexander Tassoni (Tassoni Monumento ad Alessandro Tassoni) in Modena is dedicated to the outstanding son of the city, a famous writer and diplomat. And, as usual, his veneration came after the death of a man, in the era of active construction of monuments after the unification of Italy. Alessandro Tassoni, born in Modena in 1565, received a prestigious education, and became subordinate to the Roman cardinal. Soon he regularly began to carry out diplomatic assignments at the courts of Spain and Savoy. But his fame was brought by his poem La Secchia rapita, which in 1615 gave impetus to the development of the burlesque. The writer worked in those years in an ironic genre, and he was good at it. He died in Modena in 1635.

On April 20, 1857, the city authorities began raising funds for the erection of a monument to a famous writer. He was to become one of the first statues dedicated to the prominent figures of Modena. The project was executed by the sculptor Alessandro Cavazza. The sculpture was opened on November 26, 1860. A fairly simple monument is made of white Carrara marble, it depicts a writer in full length, with a cloak draped over his shoulders. On December 12, 2015 the monument was restored in the framework of celebrating the 450th anniversary of the birth of the master of the pen.

How to get there

The monument is located in the heart of the city, near the Modena Cathedral, on Piazza della Torre. Literally next door there is the Lapidary Museum of the Duomo. Nearby there is a bus stop Piazza Mazzini, it can be reached by routes 7, 11.
