Statue of Julius Caesar, Rimini

Statue of Julius Caesar, Rimini

The monument to Julius Caesar (Statua di Giulio Cesare) in Rimini is one of many monuments which is dedicated to one of the greatest historical figures and can be found all over the country. But this statue is especially significant both for the city and for entire Italy because Rimini was an important place for Caesar himself. Even press raised a storm of hype while the monument was being installed.

History and design

The statue is dedicated to the great ancient Roman commander and politician, the most important figure of the ancient world at the time. I wasn’t placed in Rimini randomly. It was this city that Caesar chose as his military base and stronghold after he crossed the notorious Rubicon River. In March 1933, Benito Mussolini decided to give Rimini a replica of the same statue that was installed on the Capitoline Hill. In June, the city finally received it, and then, on September 10, 1933, its grand opening took place on one of the city squares. After that, the monument had flowers put at its base, then in 1942 – even bombs. In 1945, it was hidden away in order to restore it. In 1951 the monument appeared near the Arch of Augustus, only to go missing again. It was found by firefighters in 1953 and put where it can be seen today.

This detailed bronze statue is supported by a small marble pedestal. Caesar is depicted in his best attire and portrayed as a commander.

How to get
