Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, Parma

Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, Parma

Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi in Parma is dedicated to one of Italy's most brilliant and revered national heroes. As in most cities, it is located on one of the central squares. It is similar to other monuments, and yet it is unusual.

Historical personality

Giuseppe Garibaldi was one of the driving forces, without whom Risorgimento in Italy, perhaps, would not have taken place. The eternal revolutionary immediately joined the first war of independence with Austria in 1848. He headed volunteer units who went through the war with honor. After the defeat, Garibaldi, a true patriot, settled on the island of Caprera, disagreeing with the world. In 1858 a new war broke out with Austria, and the Italian hero joined up again. After the reunification of Italy, the soldier returned to his island residence. He was several times elected deputy to the state council, but he flatly refused to join dirty politics, which he did not like. In 1876, Garibaldi was awarded a lifetime pension, which he donated to charity. For this, as well as for his patriotism and intransigence, he became a people's favorite even during his lifetime.

Monument

The statue of the hero appeared in Parma in 1893, created by the sculptor Davide Calandra. It is made of bronze. Garibaldi in the cloak leans on his sword, frowning at the world around him. The pedestal has three levels. A bronze laurel wreath is placed on the first, the relief emblem of Parma – on the second. The third level is decorated with a sign from the front, and from the other sides – 3 bas-reliefs. They depict important milestones of the Second War of Independence with Austria: the defense of Rome, the Battle of San Fermo, and the landing of Garibaldi troops in Marsala in Sicily.
