Statue of the Immaculate Conception, Faenza
The statue of the Immaculate Conception (Statua dell'Immacolata Concezione all'angolo) adorns one of the old historical palaces of Faenza. This beautiful sculpture shows the religiosity of the former owners of the mansion and the cult of the Immaculate Conception, that once reigned in the city. A palace was built in the historical center of the city in the middle of the 19th century by the order of Count Ferniani. Local architect Gian Battista Bosca was in charge of the project. In addition to the many decorations on windows, balconies and the central entrance, the nobleman ordered one more. A sculpture of the Virgin Mary symbolizing the Immaculate Conception was supposed to be placed at the corner of the building. The statue was created by sculptors from Bologna, brothers Ottavio and Nicola Toselli. It was made of white marble and placed in a wall recess on the corner of the building, the sculpture is can be easily spotted at the street crossroads. The Madonna is depicted according to the Catholic canons, full-size, with her hands clasped on her chest. There are 2 bas-reliefs depicting the heads of angels and wings below her statue.
