Monument to Risorgimento Heroes, Ravenna

Monument to Risorgimento Heroes, Ravenna

Monument to the Risorgimento Heroes (Monumento ai Caduti per l'Indipendenza) one of the central squares of Ravenna which was named after Giuseppe Garibaldi’s wife and companion. The monument is dedicated to all the citizens of Ravenna who died during the Italian struggle for independence during the stormy era of the Risorgimento. Obviously, the artwork is pretty interesting and deserves attention.

History of the monument

In 1867, a commission was established in Ravenna whose purpose was to honor the memory of the dead fighters for independence. In 1860 the city mayor also called on other Italian municipalities to install monuments. In 1868, the commission invested money collected for the creation of the monument, but the amount was too small. The funds were fully provided only in 1882. Then a contest was announced in which 7 artists participated. The sculptor from Florence Cesare Zocchi won. By 1886 the work on the monument was completed, and the grand opening was held on September 1, 1888. After that, the newspapers were basically stuffed with flattering reviews of the landmark. The publication "Il Secolo" called it one of the most beautiful monuments in the whole Italy in one of their articles.

Sculptural composition

The monument is made of white marble and is surrounded with four lions, sitting on the steps. These animals symbolize the most important dates of the Risorgimento. Three steps lead to the pedestal, on both sides of which you can notice bronze laurel and palm branches. On two other sides of the pedestal, the monument has bronze bas-reliefs: the first depicts Anita Garibaldi riding a horse, and the second – Anita dying in the arms of her husband, Giuseppe Garibaldi. There is a reason why such scenes were illustrated: the revolutionist's wife did die in his arms, on a farm near Ravenna. Thus, the municipality honored her memory. The plinth is crowned by a female figure dressed in medieval armor. She is putting a laurel wreath on the head of the fallen soldier with her right hand while holding a shield with the coat of arms of Ravenna in her left one. This is an impressive scene, beautifully completing such rich sculptural installation.
