Statue of Octavian Augustus, Ravenna

Statue of Octavian Augustus, Ravenna

The statue of Octavian Augustus (Statua di Cesare Augusto) on the outskirts of Ravenna is dedicated to the famous Roman politician, the founder of the empire. Besides, he founded a large military port where the ancient settlement used to be, becoming the person supporting the city’s further development.

Historical figure

Octavian Augustus came from a wealthy family and was related to Guy Julius Caesar himself who adopted the boy. This boy then quickly became a politician. Octavian was elected consul and created triumvirates, fought against his father's enemies, and fought for power. In the end, he got power in his hands, becoming the first emperor of the nascent Roman Empire. During his reign, Octavian expanded the state territory significantly and developed the economy, especially the military branch. Octavian was also remembered as the creator of the Imperial cult.

History

The statue was presented to the public by the Duce Benito Mussolini in 1929. Initially, it stood on Piazza del Popolo in the center of Ravenna. After the World War II and the fall of the monarchy, the artwork was moved to the warehouse, where it was later restored and installed in the suburb of Classe in 1956.

In 1958, inventive Don Mesini committed a small act of vandalism to draw attention to the statue. After that, it was returned to the center of the city, restored, and installed in the suburbs once again, near the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe. All of it took place in the year 1961.

Sculptural composition

The statue of the emperor is designed quite simply. It is made of bronze where the plinth is made of white marble. The ruler of Rome is depicted in full size wearing his festive clothing and with his right hand raised up.
