Memorial to the Fight Against Mafia – a monument that is installed in memory of all the innocent victims of the Mafia. It is located in the central part of the capital of Sicily – Palermo.
History of the Memorial to the Fight Against Mafia
The square on which the monument is erected is also known for its history, it bears the name of Victims of XIII in memory of the 13 members of the Gancia Church, who were captured on April 04, 1860 and shot at this place by the Bourbon army.
The author of the sculpture «Memorial to the Fight Against Mafia» was the famous Italian sculptor Mario Pecoraine. The grand opening of the monument took place in 1982. The sculpture is represented by a 15-meter tower, executed in the style of minimalism. The monument is made of stone and is recognized as the object of modern art, the only one in Sicily. In the lower part of the statue there is an inscription that informs tourists, in whose honor this monument was erected.
