San Giovanni Evangelista, Ravenna

San Giovanni Evangelista, Ravenna

San Giovanni Evangelista (Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista) is a beautiful building in the historic part of Ravenna. There are no world-famous mosaics in the temple, as in many other churches in the city. Its uniqness is in something different – in its age. This is the oldest preserved church in Ravenna.

History of the church

In 424, the ruler of Visigoths, Galla Placidia returned to Ravenna from Constantinople. A serious storm broke out on the sea, and the queen promised to build a church dedicated to John the Apostle if she got home alive. She successfully set foot on earth in Ravenna, and soon fulfilled this vow.

In 425, the construction of the temple began, and in 434 it was successfully completed. Around 437, the church was consecrated. At the end of the 10th century, the church became the abode of Benedictine monks, who built their monastery nearby. In the 14th century, both buildings were reconstructed in the Gothic style. In 1944, the church was bombed by the Allied forces, due to which valuable mosaics and frescoes of the 12th century were lost. After the Second World War, the basilica was restored.

Architecture and interior

  • The church has a quadrangle plan, fired brick was used for the construction.
  • A gothic marble arch, richly decorated with bas-reliefs, leads to the entrance.
  • The façade of the basilica is very simple, without any frills. On the side there is a bell tower with a height of 42 meters. 2 bells date back to the 17th century, and 2 others – to 1208. The latter are among the oldest bells in Italy, which have a date and signature. They were made in the famous Roberto il Sassone smelter.
  • Inside the structure of the temple is typical: 3 naves, separated by two rows of 12 columns each. The central nave ends with an apse. In the center of the left nave there is a 14th century chapel with beautiful frescoes. Along the side aisles there are panels of fragments of the original 5th century floor mosaics saved during numerous restorations.

How to get there

The church is located in the center of Ravenna, on Piazzale Anita Garibaldi. Next to it, in addition to the monastery ,there are the city hall and the Monument to Risorgimento Heroes. In 200 meters there is the railway station and bus station. Near them there is a stop of most city bus routes.
