Museum of the Roman Civilization, Rome

The Museum of the Roman Civilization in Rome was founded in 1952 and today it is the largest of all museums that demonstrate the history and development of the Roman world. There is a museum in the area of ​​EUR, in the Southern part of the capital, near the Palace of Congresses. A large part of the expositions consists of the reproductions of lost or destroyed sculptures, as well as preserved parts of works of ancient art and structures.

Exhibits of the museum

The building itself is of great interest, with its tall columns and imposing painted walls. Expositions are divided into 59 sections, the total area of ​​which is 13 thousand square meters. But conventionally the museum is divided into 3 parts, each of them corresponds to a certain period.

  1. The first part is devoted to artifacts, preserved from the time of the founding of Rome to the era of the Roman Empire.
  2. The second collection is presented by exhibits from the Empire and the Republic.
  3. The third part of the museum shows models of the architecture of Rome of the 4th century, recreated in scale 1:250. A unique model of the ancient capital was developed on the basis of excavation and long-term research.

In the Museum of the Roman Civilization you can see:

  • Ancient Roman sculptures, paintings and textiles.
  • Models of ancient Roman monuments.
  • Collection of weapons, sarcophagi, tombstones and early Christian relics.
  • A copy of the Trajan’s column.
  • Antique and medieval literature.
  • Objects of life of ancient Romans.

The museum provides an educational program for children, a specialty store with books, postcards and video materials is open.

How to get there

To reach the Museum of the Roman Civilization, you can take one of the buses № 703, 703L, 707, 767, C8 to the Museo Civilta 'Romana stop, by metro to the station EUR Fermi.

Opening hours: daily, except Monday, from 09:00 to 14:00. There is an entrance fee. People under 18 are admitted free of charge. As of January 2018, the museum is closed for renovation.
