Fountain of San Francesco, Modena

Fountain of San Francesco, Modena

Fountain of San Francesco (Fontana di San Francesco) in Modena was created as part of the development of a series of fountains and monuments. It is quite simple, small and decorated with one modest statue. In the period between the First and Second World Wars, the mayor of Modena, Guido Sandonnino initiated the creation of a new water supply system. Its completion was the installation of several fountains. This small pool was designed by the engineer Cavazzuti, and the sculpture project was made by the sculptor Giuseppe Graziosi. The work began in 1938 and was interrupted due to the outbreak of war. It ended only in 1948.

The fountain is a small octagonal pool topped by a statue. The bronze sculpture depicts Saint Francis of Assisi, frozen in a conversation with birds by the water. A modest fountain was placed near the homonymous Franciscan church.

How to get there

The fountain is located in the south of the central part of Modena, at the intersection of Corso Canalchiaro and Rua dei Frati Minori. Near it there is another fountain – Nymph, as well as the Municipal Museum. Near the church there are stops Canalchiaro San Francesco, Rimembranze Bivio Canalchiaro. They can be reached by buses of routes 2, 5, 6, 8, 11, 11A.
