Bust of Salvatore Pes, Turin

Bust of Salvatore Pes (Busto di Salvatore Pes di Villamarina) is located in the park Giardino Aiuola Balbo. Sculpture is dedicated to another outstanding son of Italy from the time of Risorgimento. He achieved goals not with fire and sword, but with words. The Marquis of Villamarina was a skillful diplomat, first of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and then of the united Italy. Successful agreements with France, between the two wars for the independence of Italy, is his merit. He knew how to achieve results not only in negotiations with other states, but he also instructed and reassured the statesmen of Italy in the turbulent revolutionary times. After the embassy, ​​he was a senator, prefect in Milan and a city councilor in Turin. He died in 1877.

Sculpture and its creation

The funds to create the monument were allocated fairly quickly and its opening was held in 1888. The project was realized by the famous sculptor Odoardo Tabacchi. The sculpture along with the pedestal has a height of 3.7 meters. Above it, there is a bronze bust. The diplomat is depicted in the uniform with many medals received for his fruitful activity. The pedestal is made of pink granite and stone, it has a plaque with information about the life of Salvatore Villamarina.

How to get there

The sculpture is located on the south side of the park Giardino Aiuola Balbo, from the side of Via dei Mille. In this park of the 19th century there are 4 more statues. Just behind the park, in the north, there is the Natural Sciences Museum. You can get there by buses №  6, 18, 61, 68, S05, S18, STAR2. Get off at the Cavour stop.
