Bust of Gustavo Modena, Turin
Bust of Gustavo Modena is located in one of the beautiful and old park of the historic center of Turin – Giardino Aiuola Balbo. The sculpture is dedicated to one of the best actor of the first half of the 19th century – Gustavo Modena. He was an excellent theater actor and through art he brought ideas of freedom and independence to people. Gustavo was a Freemason, and he himself believed that “art for the art’s sake” is meaningless. Therefore, for him the best result of the actor's performance is when after the performance the viewer starts to think. Actor took part in the Italian revolutions of the 19th century, and after 1849 settled in Turin, and reduced the acting to a minimum. He died in 1861, and the monument to him appeared only in 1900. The project was executed by the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi.
How to get there
The sculpture is located on the north side of the Giardino Aiuola Balbo Park, on the Via Cavour side. In this park of the 19th century there are 4 more statues and a small fountain in the center. Just behind the park there is the Natural Science Museum. You can get there by buses № 6, 18, 61, 68, S05, S18, STAR2. Get off at the Cavour stop.
