Monument to Eusebio Bava, Turin
Monument to Eusebio Bava is located in a beautiful and cozy garden in the historic center of Turin, near the Po River. Here you can take a break from the city's bustle and get acquainted with famous figures of the Risorgimento era. 5 statues were established to faithful sons of Italy on the perimeter of the park and in its center. Eusebio Bava, to whom the monument is dedicated, was a military and politician of the 19th century. He went through many military campaigns, always remaining loyal to the monarchy. He is famous for his quick temper and courage. He took part in several battles of the First War with Austria for independence. After the defeat at the Battle of Custoza in 1848, he was appointed senator, continuing to command the army of Piedmont. He died in 1854 and was buried in a monumental cemetery in Turin.
Sculpture and its history
Two years after his death, in 1856, a monument was erected near the grave of the general. The project was carried out by the sculptor Giovanni Albertoni. In 1857, the monument was moved to the park Giardino dei Ripari near the square of Maria Theresa. And already in 1874 it was placed on the current place in the park Giardino Aiuola Balbo, created in the second half of the 19th century.
The statue has a total height of 4 meters. Baveno granite was used for the pedestal and white marble for sculpture. An inscription about the life of a military man is engraved on the front of the pedestal. The general himself is depicted full-length, dressed in military uniform and cloak, with his left hand on the hilt of the sword.
How to get there
The sculpture is located on the east side of the park, on the side of Via S. Massimo. Behind the monument there is a small fountain. In the neighborhood there are 4 more statues. Just behind the park in the north there is the Natural Science Museum. You can get there by buses № 6, 18, 61, 68, S05, S18, STAR2. Get off at the Cavour stop.
