Monument to Paolo Catone, Turin
The monument to Paolo Catone in Turin is another reminder of human kindness and sacrifice. However, such virtues are often quickly forgotten. Therefore, it is not surprising that the monument was eventually moved away from the city center.
History of the monument
The monument is dedicated to a cultural figure, a man of art and patron of arts Paolo Catone who lived in the 19th century. After his death, he bequeathed his fortune to the Hospice of Charity in Turin. By agreement of the administration, the sponsors who donated more than 100,000 lire had to be immortalized. Therefore, when Catone died in 1879, the hospital management ordered to create a monument. The statue was made by sculptor Giuseppe Dini, and it was installed in 1880 on Via Po almost in the center of Turin. However, soon, in 1883, it was moved to the newly built Insitute of Care for the Elderly.
Sculpture
The 2 meters high statue is made of white Carrara marble and stands on a plinth. A serious-looking man is staring down at us while holding his right hand on his chest. With his left hand, he holds one of two books lying on the table behind. This is another example of the fact that wealth does not always mean stinginess.
