Monument to Giuseppe Consul, Turin

Monument to Giuseppe Consul, Turin

The monument to Giuseppe Consul is situated quite far from the center of Turin. Not very noticeable monument tells us the story of a generous and open person. He was not a king or a general, and therefore, just like the monument, he was pushed to the back of the history.

Personality and history of the monument

The statue is dedicated to Giuseppe Consul who lived in the 19th century. He was the manager of the Royal Theater in Turin and made a considerable fortune in his life. In May 1867, the impresario died having left a solid legacy. He bequeathed everything to the Hospice of Charity in his hometown. The following year, its management decided to honor the theatergoer and build a monument dedicated to him. This was an unspoken rule for sponsors who donated more than 100,000 lire. The statue was placed in the courtyard of the hospital in 1868. Sculptor Pietro Della Vedova worked on its creation. In 1883, the monument was transferred to the building of the Insitute of Care for the Elderly.

Sculpture

The statue itself is quite simple. Its height is 2 meters total which includes 1.5 meters of a plinth. White Carrara marble was used during its creation. In his right hand, Giuseppe holds a pen, in the left one – a sheet of paper. Behind him, there is a table covered with a cloth on which papers lie. A typical intellectual who knows nothing about the suffering of the poor. However, his generous donations tell the opposite.

How to get

The monument is located near the Department of Economics of the University of Turin, on Corso Unione Sovietica, 218. It is located in the San Rita district, south of the city center.
