Albert I of Belgium Bridge, Turin

Albert I of Belgium Bridge, Turin

Albert I of Belgium Bridge in Turin (Ponte Alberto del Belgio) is the very first highway connecting the industrial areas and the city center. It connects the banks of the Dora Riparia River slightly to the north of the center of Turin. Now it became less popular due to the larger transport artery in the neighborhood.

History of the bridge

It is never easy and honorable to be the first one. The bridge has accepted this responsibility with honor: to become a connecting link between the city center and industrial areas in the north. Work on its creation was completed in the distant 1872. By the end of the 19th century, the railway was laid to the bridge, which connected Turin and Milan. Soon two more bridges appeared along the river. But the load on the transport artery did not fall, but on the contrary grew due to the growth in production. Therefore, in 1912 the bridge was reconstructed and expanded. Already in the second half of the 20th century, a new, modern and large bridge with several lanes was built next door. Despite this, the Albert I of Belgium Bridge still performs its functions today.

Albert I, King of Belgium

The bridge is named after Albert I, King of Belgium, who ruled from 1909 to 1934. He became famous for governing the country and troops during the First World War, becoming a national hero. Being the whole-rounded person, he devoted a lot of time to sports and science, and received the nickname of the King-climber. He died, falling from the cliff during one of the ascents.

Bridge architecture

Nowadays the bridge has a length of 45 m and a width of 20 m. Its construction consists of three arches and two supports located in the water. The bridge is quite simple, but, nevertheless, it has decorations made of stone and brick. Railings of the bridge are cast-iron. It has one car traffic lane, two pedestrian and one bicycle lanes. The nearby main road is slightly elevated in comparison to the old one. From the sidewalk of the bridge you can see a beautiful view of a pretty river embankment, planted with trees on both sides.

How to get there

The Albert I of Belgium Bridge is located near the eastern end of the Dora Park. It is a part of Corso Principe Oddone. There are two more bridges higher up the current that previously had the same importance: the Charles Emmanuel III Bridge and the Blessed Amadeus IX Bridge. You can get there by tram № 10 and buses № 11, 46, 49, 91, 10N, N10. You need to get out at the bus stop Baldissera.
