Blessed Amadeus IX Bridge, Turin

Blessed Amadeus IX Bridge, Turin

Blessed Amadeus IX Bridge in Turin (Ponte Amedeo IX il Beato) became worthy of attention after the reconstruction. Previously, it was another bridge linking industrial areas with the city center. Today the bridge also remains a significant transport artery that connects the banks of the Dora Riparia River.

History of the bridge

In 1910, the city government received several petitions from citizens demanding the construction of a bridge. The Charles Emmanuel III Bridge built 20 years before was not enough for increasing transport load. And a new river crossing was needed to connect areas Borgo Vittoria and Valdocco. In 1911, company Porcheddu had won the tender for construction. Its proposal included the reinforced concrete structure with one arch, following the example of Ponte del Risorgimento in Rome. The authorities approved the project. Construction, funded by factory owners in the northern industrial areas, was completed in 1912. In 1994, the plant near the bridge was dismantled, which made the reconstruction possible. It began in 2009, and on July 21, 2011, the official opening of the bridge, which acquired a new look, took place.

Blessed Amadeus IX

The bridge bears the name of King Blessed Amadeus IX of Savoy. He ruled in the 15th century, but, since he had epilepsy, de facto power was in the hands of his wife and brother. During his life, he sacrificed a lot of money for the sick and the poor. For this the Catholic Church beatified him in 1677.

Bridge architecture

At one time the bridge was one of the largest reinforced concrete structures. Today, it retained its base with one arch, but outwardly underwent significant changes in the framework of reconstruction in the early 21st century. It has 6 lanes, 2 central are designed for public transport. Pedestrian and bicycle lanes are on two sides. In its center there is a supporting element with cables, which is now the focal point of the bridge. This is a pair of V-shaped construction of Corten steel, 29 meters high and weighing 850 tons. It has a characteristic color and is reminiscent of the production of iron products in the 19th century.

How to get there

The bridge is located slightly north of the center of Turin, in the Dora Park. It connects the streets Via Livorno and Via Orvieto. You can reach the bridge, and the park itself on buses № 52, 60, 67, 72, W60. You need to get out at the Treviso stop.
