Ponte Giorgio Washington, Turin
Ponte Giorgio Washington in Turin is one of the youngest bridges built over the Dora Riparia River. It is also the last one before the confluence with the Po.
History of the bridge
Until the mid-19th century, the Dora River was the natural border of Turin. However, the growth of industry and the city itself resulted in the strong need of bridges. Historically and chronologically the sequence of the construction of these crossings moved downstream (with some exceptions). Ponte Giorgio Washington was built in 1932 by the company "De Filippi". The project was developed and implemented by the architect E. Peretti. The bridge was named after well-known George Washington, the former first president of the United States. He played a fundamental role in the development of the United States as a country and the development of the Constitution.
Bridge design
The later the bridge over the Dora was built, the larger it became. The length of the Washington Bridge is 53, and the width is 18 meters. Sizes became bigger but the design remained the same. This is a reinforced concrete arched structure typical of the time with a single span. It is simple and reliable which is not surprising given the potential flooding in this area. Today, the bridge has two lanes, and, obviously, sidewalks. It is fenced with iron railings that are divided into sections by stone pillars. The bridge offers a beautiful view of the green promenade.
