Zoo, Naples

Lo Zoo di Napoli (Naples Zoo) is one of the main family attractions of the city. It's popular not only among locals but also the guests of Naples. The zoo is located in Fuorigrotta district and covers an area of 100,000 m2.
Zoo history
Lo Zoo di Napoli was founded in 1940, but, due to the outbreak of World War II, it was closed. It opened its doors to the visitors only in 1949. For many years, the zoo was very popular among residents. Hundreds of thousands of people visited it annually.
Rare and threatened animals and birds lived in the walls of the zoo.
In 1990, the zoo faced difficult times, since the company to which it belonged went bankrupt and was unable to maintain the entire territory of the zoo. In September 2003, the Naples Zoo was fully closed.
The second time, a new life in the walls of the zoo began in 2005, when it was again opened to the public. Currently, only a part of the zoo is open to the tourists, whereas the second half of the territory is under reconstruction.
