Art Museum, Ravenna

Art Museum, Ravenna

The Ravenna Art Museum houses a collection of artworks from the medieval times and up to modernity. To correspond with its high cultural value the museum is housed in an old and fancy building called Loggetta Lombardesca that used to be a monastery once. Various paintings, sculptures, and contemporary mosaics.

History of the museum

The monastery building was built in the early 16th century and it belonged to the Santa Maria abbey whose church can still be found standing nearby. Throughout the centuries this place underwent several reconstructions, the most significant ones were performed during the Napoleonic occupation.

It was built in the Renaissance style, its elegant five-arch loggia became the symbol of the entire complex.

The Accademia Gallery was founded in the city in 1829 which later became museum’s progenitor. In the 1970s a major restoration was carried out in the building of the former monastery after which the academy and pinacotheca moved to another place and the Natural Science Museum became a part of it instead. In 1998–1999 the facilities were separated and in 2002 the Ravenna Art Museum started functioning on its own. In 2010 it was recognized as a “Quality museum” which proves the high regard Emilia-Romagna has for it.

Museum’s collections

The museum possesses hundreds of exhibits. The majority of them is paintings since the place was meant to be an art gallery initially and canvases created by famous painters were the only contribution to the collections for quite a long time at first. Visitors can also enjoy a series of sculptures and contemporary mosaics. The exhibition is divided into several parts:

  • Art gallery. The centerpiece of the pinacotheca includes artworks from abolished churches and monasteries. Later during the 19th century, other, usually religiously-themed paintings were donated to the museum. Today the collection boasts over 300 canvases dating back to different eras from the 14th century and till the modern times. Among the most important works “Compianto su Cristo deposto dalla croce” made by Giorgio Vasari stands out the most. There are also paintings created by the professionals such as Lorenzo Monaco, Taddeo di Bartolo, Antonio Vivarini, Carlo Cignani, Guercino, Antonio Ciseri. Works of contemporary artists, such as Gustav Klimt and Maurizio Cattelan can be found here as well.
  • Mosaic collection. The idea to create a collection that would consist of modern mosaics was born in 1951, then in 1959, an exhibition was set up. Today the museum boasts around 20 glass pieces of art created by famous contemporary artists. Besides that, this collection serves as a foundation for the documentation center that studies and improves the related field.

The museum regularly holds temporary art exhibitions usually dedicated to the modern artists and thus advancing art. The library inside the museum has around 5000 art-related volumes.
