The entire history of this type of art from the ancient times and up to the present is presented here.

Museum's history and collections

The TAMO Museum was founded by the town council of Ravenna in the second half of the 20th century. It was established in a 14th-century monumental complex – church San Nicolo. The museum tour leads visitors through the centuries immersing them into the history of creation and evolution of the mosaic art in Ravenna. Unique archaeological pieces from different epochs impress and let you experience the age-old cultural heritage of Ravenna yourself. That’s why this museum is a good starting point for those who want to explore the city’s history. The multimedia content introduces visitors to the process of mosaic creation showing that this is indeed a quite hard and laborious work.

In 1965 the museum purchased a unique collection that included 21 artworks made by Italian masters from the 20th century. The collection «Mosaici tra Inferno e Paradiso» is seven hundredth birthday anniversary of the famous poet named Dante Alighieri; all the artworks are themed accordingly to the Divine Comedy.

There is also another separate permanent exhibition «Il Genio delle acque» with mosaic floors of ancient Roman houses. Museum also offers an interesting educational project.
