House Museum of Palazzo Sorbello, Perugia

In the House Museum of Palazzo Sorbello in Perugia (Casa Museo di Palazzo Sorbello) you can get acquainted with the most interesting collections of precious and ancient things. The exhibition is located in a 17th century palace belonging to a well-known Italian family. Paintings, porcelain and fabric products, printed publications are presented here. Inside, you can feel like a resident of the 18th century, being among the carved furniture, beautiful chandeliers, high arches and frescos of the time.

Collections of the museum

Palazzo Sorbello preserves the atmosphere of the upper world, presenting refined objects of past years to the attention of visitors. The museum contains:

  • A collection of paintings – many works cover a period of time from 16 to 20 century. Particular attention is drawn to the abundance of portraits, paintings on copper and glass. Here you can see the work of such famous authors as Pietro Benvenuti, Carlo Labruzzi, Francesco Appiani, François-Xavier Fabre.
  • Engravings – the collection has more than 2500 exhibits. Guests can get acquainted with the works devoted to the French Revolution, ancient geographical maps and atlases. Also there are engravings belonging to the hands of such masters as Jacques Callot, Stefano della Bella, Carlo Lasinio.
  • The library is a collection of rare old books and ancient manuscripts dating from the 15th and 19th centuries. Separately there is a collection of literature for children.
  • A collection of porcelain – visitors can admire works of not only Italian, but also foreign masters. Exquisite sets, candlesticks, figurines will catch your attention.
  • Fabrics are represented by hand-embroidered textiles of the first half of the 20th century.

History of the museum

The museum is located in a mansion belonging to the family Bourbon di Sorbello. Members of this family were quite famous and influential in Italy. The building was created in the 17th century, and then it looked like a small fortress. In subsequent years, the defensive system was improved, new towers and stairs were built. Over time, the Palazzo Sorbello in Perugia turned into a real fortress on a hill, hidden by a dense forest.

How to get there

You can get to Palazzo Sorbello by reaching the P. Cavallotti stop by bus C, U, Z2.

Opening hours: the house museum is open for visits from Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 14:00. You can enter the museum no later than half an hour before closing.

The cost of admission is 4 euros. Data of May 2018.
