History
The Academy of Fine Arts Pietro Vannucci was founded in the spring of the distant 1573. At that time it was known as the Academy of Design and, by the way, it started its activity 11 years after the first Academy of Italy – in Florence. The originators of the school were such masters as Orazio Alfani and Raffaello Sozi.
The Academy acquired its own constitution in 1791. But it got the current name in 1820 thanks to the artist and teacher of painting Tommaso Minardi. At the same time, modernization was carried out both from the training and from the administrative point of view. Now the educational institution united both ancient and modern art in itself. A scholarship program was launched that allowed students to travel to different cities in Italy.
In the early 20th century, the Academy moved to the building of the former monastery of San Francesco. Today it is one of the largest and most important cultural institutions of the city.
